Abiru commissions rehabilitated classrooms, demands improved academic performance

The Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru commissioning rehabilitated two-storey classroom blocks at Government College Lagos, Eric Moore, Surulere

The Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, and his wife, Feyisola Abiru, have commissioned rehabilitated two-storey classroom blocks at Government College Lagos, Eric Moore, Surulere, to improve learning outcomes and promote academic excellence.

The projects, commissioned on Monday, feature new furniture, upgraded toilet facilities and a functional water supply system supported by a borehole and a 2,500-gallon water tank.

The intervention also increased the number of classrooms from 15 to 20 to help reduce class sizes to 50 students.

Abiru, who attended the school between 1975 and 1981, described the intervention as a personal homecoming, recalling previous support for the school hall, administrative building and a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics laboratory equipped with high-speed internet and solar power.

He, however, stressed that improved infrastructure must translate into better academic performance, expressing concern that the school’s overall performance in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination fell below 50 per cent.

The senator pledged to reward teachers if the school’s WAEC results improved significantly, while also promising cash rewards for outstanding students in the examination.

He urged the school management and relevant authorities to strengthen teaching and supervision, charging students to embrace discipline, hard work and a commitment to academic excellence.

Abiru commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its emphasis on human capital development and sustainable development. He also praised the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, for executing the intervention.

The senator expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Education District IV, the school management, the Government College Lagos Old Boys Association, teachers and other stakeholders for their continued support.

He said the true measure of the investment would be reflected in the quality of students produced and their academic achievements, urging the school community to maintain the facilities and restore the institution’s tradition of excellence.
