Spiro targets expansion of electric motorcycle network in Nigeria

Spiro, an electric mobility company operating in Africa, has unveiled plans to expand its battery-swapping infrastructure, strengthen local assembly and extend its operations beyond Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states as it seeks to deepen the adoption of electric motorcycles in Nigeria.

The company disclosed this at its second edition of Media Connect in Lagos, where it introduced its new Country Head and Managing Director for Nigeria, Prasad Sane.

Sane said the company would focus on making electric mobility more accessible and affordable, while expanding its network of battery-swapping stations, service centres and after-sales support facilities.

He said the strategy would build on Spiro’s existing operations in its three priority markets, with plans to enter additional states as the company scales its presence in the country.

“Today is about progress, partnership and purpose. A year ago, we shared our vision for electric mobility in Nigeria. Today, we are demonstrating tangible results and a clear path forward.

“My mandate is simple: to make Spiro the most trusted, affordable and accessible electric mobility solution for Nigerians, beginning with Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states,” Sane said.

According to him, the company was expanding beyond the supply of electric motorcycles to develop an integrated mobility ecosystem built around its battery-swapping technology and rider support services.

Under the model, riders could exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones in less than a minute, reducing downtime and eliminating the need to wait for conventional battery charging.

Sane said the system was designed to help riders reduce their exposure to fuel costs and lower maintenance expenses, while providing a more convenient alternative for commercial motorcycle operations.

He added that the company’s model could also create economic opportunities, support small businesses and improve the livelihoods of riders.

As part of its growth strategy, Spiro plans to accelerate the deployment of battery-swapping stations and service centres across Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states to improve access to batteries, technical support and maintenance services.

The company also intends to strengthen the reliability and operational efficiency of its battery-swapping network, which is central to its business model.

Also, Spiro said it would deepen partnerships with financial institutions, logistics operators and rider communities to improve access to electric motorcycles and its Battery-as-a-Service offerings.

The approach is expected to support riders who may find the upfront cost of acquiring electric motorcycles a barrier to adoption by providing alternative routes to accessing the technology.

The company also plans to scale local assembly operations, technical training and after-sales services, with a focus on creating employment opportunities for young Nigerians and women.

Local assembly and technical capacity development could also support the wider electric mobility value chain, including vehicle maintenance, battery management and customer support.

The event featured live product demonstrations, operational showcases and the unveiling of the Spiro Ekon M1 Version 3, as the company highlighted its product development and expansion plans for the Nigerian market.
