Rep hails Abbas as Tinubu upgrades Kaduna Polytechnic to university

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen

The member representing Jema’a/Sanga Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, Daniel Amos, has commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, following President Bola Tinubu’s assent to the bill upgrading the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, to the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna.

Amos, who chairs the House Committee on House Services, described the development as historic, saying it demonstrated purposeful leadership and a commitment to advancing education in Kaduna State and Nigeria.

Kaduna Polytechnic was established in 1956 as Kaduna Technical Institute and is one of Nigeria’s long-established public tertiary institutions.

The proposed conversion was considered by the House of Representatives in October 2025 as part of legislation to establish a Federal University of Technology in Kaduna.

The bill had sought to repeal the law establishing the polytechnic and provide a legal framework for the new university

In a statement on Friday, the lawmaker said Abbas had demonstrated dedication to educational development by sponsoring and pursuing the legislation despite the demanding responsibilities of presiding over the House of Representatives.

“Speaker Tajudeen’s leadership on this bill demonstrates purposeful commitment to education and national development,” Amos said.

He said the new university would strengthen technical and vocational education, promote skills development and contribute to national development.

Amos also expressed appreciation to Tinubu for granting presidential assent to the bill, alongside legislation establishing the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Yaba, Lagos.

Both bills were sponsored by Abbas.

He said the President’s assent reflected his administration’s commitment to educational reform and human capital development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The lawmaker congratulated the people of Kaduna State, as well as the management, staff and students of the former Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, on the institution’s elevation to university status.

He assured them that the House of Representatives would continue to support efforts to ensure the smooth take-off of the new university.
