Fubara, Wike meet Oko-Jumbo, lawmakers as Assembly resumption looms

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara (L) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike (R)

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, have held another meeting with lawmakers and other political stakeholders as part of efforts to continue the reconciliation of opposing camps in the state.

The meeting, held on Sunday at Fubara’s private residence in Port Harcourt, was the third since the governor joined the Rainbow Coalition led by Wike.

The latest engagement brought together key political figures involved in the crisis that erupted in October 2023 and persisted until the declaration of a state of emergency in the state.

Those in attendance included the governor, members of the state legislature and local government chairmen aligned with Wike.

There were indications that Victor Oko-Jumbo, who led the faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Fubara during the crisis, and two other lawmakers might be allowed to resume sitting alongside their colleagues.

Since the lifting of the state of emergency in September 2025, the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly has resumed legislative activities, while Oko-Jumbo and two other lawmakers have remained outside the legislative arrangement.

Their continued exclusion has raised concerns among residents about the completeness of the reconciliation process and the prospect of lasting peace in the state.

The participation of Amaewhule, other lawmakers and the chairmen of the state’s 23 local government areas in the latest engagement underscores the involvement of political structures associated with Wike in the reconciliation efforts.

Although details of Sunday’s private meeting have not been made public, sources said the discussions aimed to build on previous engagements, strengthen reconciliation, and explore ways to accommodate Fubara’s loyalists in the state’s evolving political arrangement.

Wike had earlier led a delegation comprising the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Kingsley Chinda, Amaewhule, and other stakeholders to meet with Fubara and his supporters as part of efforts to resolve the protracted political crisis.

Fubara and the Amaewhule-led House of Assembly had been at loggerheads for more than two years following a disagreement between the governor and his predecessor, Wike.

At the height of the crisis, lawmakers made two attempts to impeach Fubara before President Bola Tinubu intervened.

The renewed engagement between the executive and legislative camps is expected to test the durability of the reconciliation process as political actors begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, it remains uncertain whether the talks will produce a lasting resolution, particularly amid concerns over the influence of Wike’s camp on local government leadership and the selection of candidates for the forthcoming elections.

The extent to which Fubara’s loyalists will be accommodated in the emerging political arrangement, including whether Oko-Jumbo and the two other lawmakers will return to the House, also remains unclear.

This is as other political parties in the State, like the Action Democratic Party (ADP), National Democratic Party (NPC) continue to intensify strategies to take over the Brick House
