Ebonyi 2027: Summit rejects automatic second term for Nwifuru, endorses Odii

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Ifeanyi Odii

The Ebonyi Peoples’ Political/Economic Summit 2026 has rejected the notion of an automatic second term for Governor Francis Nwifuru, called for a change of leadership, and endorsed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, popularly known as Anyichuks, for the 2027 election.

The summit, held on October 19, 2026, at DafoDil Resort, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, adopted a communiqué emphasising that competence, integrity, accountability and performance should determine whether an incumbent deserves another term in office.

According to the communiqué, participants concluded that the incumbent administration had not sufficiently justified a renewed mandate based on the issues and evidence presented at the gathering.

They consequently called for a change of leadership and identified Odii as their preferred alternative.

The summit maintained that political officeholders should be assessed on their records, policy outcomes and contributions to the welfare of the people rather than on incumbency alone.

It cited Sections 179 and 180 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, in discussing the constitutional provisions governing governorship elections and tenure.

The participants argued that a second term should not be treated as an entitlement, insisting that voters have the right to evaluate an administration’s performance before deciding whether to renew its mandate.

The communiqué also condemned alleged intimidation, harassment and threats against opposition politicians, critics, civil society organisations and media practitioners.

It called for a political environment that guarantees freedom of expression, respect for fundamental rights and equal protection under the law, stressing the need for peaceful political engagement and the protection of democratic participation as the state approaches the 2027 election.

Beyond its political resolutions, the summit outlined six priority areas for addressing Ebonyi’s economic challenges, creating jobs and improving public services.

On fiscal transparency and accountability, it proposed an Open Treasury Portal and the publication of government budgets and quarterly budget implementation reports to strengthen public scrutiny of revenue and expenditure.

For economic diversification, participants called for increased investment in agriculture, mining, manufacturing and private enterprise to broaden the state’s economic base and create employment opportunities.

The summit also proposed establishing agro-processing zones in Abakaliki, Afikpo and Uburu to promote value addition, support farmers, attract investment and expand markets for locally produced agricultural goods.

On solid minerals, it recommended reforms to encourage local processing, including the development of mineral-processing plants and the establishment of a Solid Minerals Development Company to increase the economic value derived from the state’s mineral resources.

The communiqué identified education, healthcare and youth empowerment as critical areas requiring sustained investment. It called for programmes to strengthen human capacity, expand opportunities for young people and improve residents’ quality of life.

For infrastructure, the summit proposed constructing 200 kilometres of farm-to-market roads, improving electricity supply to support industrial activities and expanding broadband connectivity to facilitate commerce and wider economic participation.

The participants said the proposed interventions could help tackle poverty, stimulate job creation and turn the state’s agricultural and mineral resources into sustainable economic opportunities.

However, translating the proposals into tangible results would require detailed planning, sustainable financing and effective implementation. Questions remain about how the projects would be funded, the partnerships needed to attract private investment, their implementation timelines and the mechanisms for monitoring progress.

Clear performance indicators and transparent oversight, the summit’s position suggests, would be necessary to enable residents to assess progress and hold the government accountable for its commitments.

As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 governorship election, the proposals raise questions about how candidates intend to address Ebonyi’s development needs and how voters can measure their promises against verifiable records and practical plans.

Ultimately, the election will give the electorate an opportunity to assess the candidates, their policy commitments and their approaches to governance, with accountability and the welfare of the people remaining central to the debate.
