Jaza Energy Limited (“Jaza” or “the Company”) refers to the publication by The Guardian on 16 October 2026, titled “Lawyers petition IGP over disappearance of two Jaza Energy workers” (the “Publication”). The Company considers it necessary to clarify certain assertions contained in the Publication, particularly the suggestion that it failed to acknowledge or respond to correspondence from the legal representatives of the families of its two missing employees, Mr. Oluwagbenga Akinluyi and Mr. Samuel Adesanya Bilewomo.
THE ALLEGATION THAT JAZA IGNORED THE FAMILIES’ LEGAL REQUESTS IS UNTRUE AND UNSUPPORTED BY THE DOCUMENTED FACTS
The suggestion that Jaza ignored the requests made by the families’ legal representatives is untrue, unfounded and inconsistent with the documented course of events. The Company categorically rejects any suggestion that it disregarded the correspondence or failed to take steps to address the concerns raised on behalf of the families.
Following receipt of the letter dated 2 October 2026 from Abope Chambers, acting on behalf of the families, Jaza, through its solicitors, made several attempts to contact the firm by telephone and email using the contact details provided in the said letter. Thereafter, a substantive written response addressing the questions raised by the families’ legal representatives was delivered to Abope Chambers on 5 October 2026.
For the avoidance of doubt, Jaza retains a copy of the said response, duly acknowledged as received by Abope Chambers on 5 October 2026. The Company is therefore able to substantiate its position that it responded to the correspondence received from the families’ legal representatives. This documented chronology directly contradicts the suggestion that Jaza failed to respond to their requests.
The substantive response addressed the questions raised concerning the employees’ assignments, accommodation arrangements, last known communications, and the steps taken by the Company to report the disappearance and assist the relevant authorities. The suggestion that the Company ignored the families’ requests therefore fails to reflect the documented correspondence and the steps actually taken.
Jaza considers it regrettable that a publication accessible to the public should convey an impression inconsistent with the documented facts, particularly in a matter as sensitive as the disappearance of its employees. The Company respectfully urges that public reporting of this matter reflect the complete and accurate factual position.
JAZA REPORTED THE DISAPPEARANCE TO THE POLICE AND HAS CONTINUED TO SUPPORT THE INVESTIGATIONS
Jaza further rejects any suggestion that it failed to take appropriate steps to report the disappearance to the relevant authorities.
The Company’s records establish that the disappearance was reported to the police on 10 September 2026, following the loss of contact with the employees on 9 September 2026. An initial telephone report was made to the Imo State Police control room at approximately noon on 10 September 2026, followed by an in-person report at the Police Divisional Headquarters in Owerri later that day.
Jaza retains records relating to these reports and the subsequent engagements undertaken with the relevant law enforcement and security agencies. Thereafter, the Company, through its representatives and legal advisers, made further formal petitions and engaged with the relevant authorities.
Jaza has continued to cooperate with the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), providing information and assistance in support of their ongoing investigations. The Company remains committed to supporting these efforts and assisting the relevant authorities in establishing the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and locating the missing employees.
Given the sensitive nature of the matter and the fact that investigations remain ongoing, Jaza considers it inappropriate to disclose further operational or investigative details that could compromise those efforts. The Company will continue to provide appropriate assistance to the relevant authorities as required.
JAZA REMAINS COMMITTED TO THE WELFARE OF ITS EMPLOYEES AND THEIR FAMILIES
Jaza recognises the profound distress and uncertainty experienced by the families following the disappearance of their loved ones. The Company shares their concern for the safety and whereabouts of the employees and remains committed to supporting the ongoing efforts to locate them.
The Company’s actions since the disappearance, including its reports to the authorities, continued cooperation with the investigations and substantive response to the families’ legal representatives, demonstrate that it has not treated this matter with indifference or disregarded the concerns raised by the families.
Jaza respects the families’ right to seek information and pursue legitimate avenues for obtaining answers. At the same time, it is important that public statements concerning the Company’s conduct accurately reflect the available facts. Allegations that the Company ignored the families’ legal requests should not be presented as established facts without due regard to the documented correspondence and the steps taken by the Company.
Jaza therefore calls for responsible, balanced and accurate reporting of this matter, with due regard to the available facts, the interests of the families and the ongoing efforts of the relevant authorities to establish the whereabouts of the missing employees.
PUBLIC APPEAL FOR INFORMATION
Jaza appeals to members of the public who may have any credible or useful information concerning the disappearance or whereabouts of Mr. Oluwagbenga Akinluyi and Mr. Samuel Adesanya Bilewomo to come forward.
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact Jaza Energy through its established communication channels or report such information directly to the appropriate police authorities. Information that may appear minor could prove valuable in assisting the ongoing investigations and establishing the whereabouts of the missing employees.
The Company respectfully urges members of the public to assist the families and the relevant authorities by providing any information that may help clarify the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and facilitate the safe return of the two employees.
Jaza remains hopeful that the ongoing investigations will yield positive results and that both employees will be found safe
