NIWA reaffirms commitment to improve waterways navigation, safety standards

National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA)

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has reaffirmed its commitment to working with state governments, industry stakeholders, host communities and development partners to improve navigation, strengthen safety standards, modernise facilities and protect the waterways on which many livelihoods depend.

The Acting Managing Director, NIWA, Yusuf Girei, stressed that excellence in the maritime sector is a shared responsibility that requires effective regulation, investment in innovation, skilled professionals and a firm commitment to safety and environmental sustainability at the heart of operations.

Delivering his goodwill message on the occasion of the 2026 World Maritime Day celebration commemorated in Nigeria at the weekend, Girei underscored the need for stakeholders in the maritime sector to translate policies into practical actions that will improve safety, strengthen infrastructure and support trade and economic development.

“Strong policies create value only when they are translated into meaningful action. In the maritime sector, that means safer waterways, reliable infrastructure, environmental stewardship and services that support trade and economic growth,” he said.

He commended stakeholders for their dedication to advancing the country’s maritime sector, especially the inland water sector, noting that by working together, the sector will be competitive, inclusive and prepared for the future.
Girei commended President Bola Tinubu and all stakeholders whose commitment keeps the country’s maritime industry moving, urging participants to turn shared ambition into practical results.

The NIWA boss also urged industry players to move beyond shared aspirations and ensure that policies and commitments produce measurable results across the sector.
