LACCOSA ‘76 set gives back to alma mater

Lagos City College Old Students Association (LACCOSA)

Members of the 1976 set of the Lagos City College Old Students Association (LACCOSA), Sabo, Yaba, are set to reward students and provide medical care for teachers as part of activities commemorating their 50th anniversary.
Briefing reporters yesterday at the college premises, Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mr Dave Nwanze, said the weeklong event would involve donation of materials to the school, medical outreach for teachers and staff, and award of cash prizes to the best students in science, art, and commercial classes.

Nwanze was supported at the briefing by some of the members, including Mr Kunle Sanyaolu, Kayode Adeegbe, Mary Awoniyi, Prof Taiwo Ajala, Mr Tony Bello, among others.
Nwanze described the golden jubilee anniversary, themed: “Uncommon Grace,” as a significant milestone for the set.
While shedding more light on the activities lined up for the event, Nwanze said the set will make a glorious return to the college tomorrow, October 21, and will feature mentorship lectures for the current students on the “Path to Success,” the commissioning of the set’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project, and an inter-religious thanksgiving service.

The celebrations will be rounded up on Saturday, October 24, with a Gala Night at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja.
Nwanze added that members would give mentorship lecture to current students to motivate them.
In their assessment of public secondary education before and now, Sanyaolu said while he would not agree that the standard has dropped, there is an urgent need for government to improve on the provision of infrastructure to schools.
Sanyaolu also stressed the need for teacher training and employmewnt of more teachers so as to meet the stipulated teacher-pupil ration. He lamented that most schools are currently overcrowded making teaching and learning difficult.

Commenting on the previous interventions of old students generally in the college, Nwanze lauded the association as a whole, saying the body had rehabilitated laboratories, installed solar powered ICT centre, provided furniture and other teaching aids.
