The Management of the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, has announced the indefinite suspension of academic activities at its School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing following the death of a nursing student, Goodwin Taiwo.
Taiwo, who was reportedly asthmatic, died at the institution under circumstances that have sparked controversy and protests among students, who alleged that negligence in handling his medical emergency contributed to his death.
The suspension was announced in a notice issued yesterday and signed by Coordinator of the Programme and Head of School, Dr Taiwo Omirin, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director.
Omirin said that the suspension would affects students in the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sessions, including master’s student nurses and those undergoing orientation.
She said that the resident students were also directed to vacate the hostels with immediate effect.
The Coordinator explained that the decision followed the death of Student Nurse Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo, which reportedly triggered unrest within the hospital community.
She stated that the suspension was necessary to ensure a peaceful and conducive environment for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
Omirin, however, urged affected students and other stakeholders to remain calm and comply with the directive pending further communication, while expressing regret over any inconvenience the decision might cause.
