Ebola: NEMA urges Nigerians to be calm, vigilant

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)

THE National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged Nigerians to remain calm and maintain high levels of vigilance following the confirmation of an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Director General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, made the call in a Press Statement signed by the agency’s spokesman, Ezekiel Manzo.

She assured the public that appropriate health authorities are fully mobilised to contain the situation.

The DG noted that the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, alongside the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and the FCT Health Services Secretariat, are leading the national response, with the patient already isolated and receiving treatment while contact tracing is underway.

Umar also said that NEMA stands ready to provide emergency-support coordination as required.

Highlighting that Ebola spreads primarily through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated materials, the agency advised citizens to observe basic hygiene, avoid contact with suspected cases or wild animals, and report symptoms immediately.

Umar appealed to the public to cooperate with contact-tracing teams and avoid spreading misinformation.

“I particularly appeal to Nigerians to cooperate fully with contact-tracing teams and to avoid rumours, misinformation and stigmatisation.”

She said that the NCDC can be reached through toll-free line, 6232, for reporting suspected cases.

Recalling Nigeria’s successful containment of the virus in 2014, NEMA emphasised that early detection, responsible behaviour, and coordinated institutional action remain key to breaking the chain of transmission.
