Reps deepen Nigeria-US ties as chamber President visits Abbas

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen

The House of Representatives is seeking to strengthen Nigeria-US parliamentary relations and expand economic cooperation between the two countries as the President of the United States Chamber of Commerce, Ms. Suzanne P. Clark, prepares to meet the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, on Monday.

The planned visit is expected to provide an opportunity to explore investment opportunities, deepen bilateral engagement and strengthen ties between Nigeria’s legislature and the American business community.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria-USA Parliamentary Relations, Hon. Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, disclosed Clark’s planned visit during a meeting, highlighting ongoing efforts to promote closer relations between both countries.

The engagement is expected to focus on areas where stronger parliamentary relations and private-sector collaboration could support trade, investment and economic development.

The United States Chamber of Commerce is a major business organisation representing American companies, making Clark’s visit an opportunity for Nigerian lawmakers to engage with the American business community on ways to improve economic relations.

Closer cooperation could also help promote dialogue on the business environment, encourage investment partnerships and strengthen links between Nigerian and American enterprises.

Onuakalusi, who chairs the Nigeria-United States Parliamentary Friendship Group in the House of Representatives, has pursued parliamentary diplomacy through engagements with American lawmakers, policy institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen bilateral relations and promote opportunities for economic cooperation.

In May 2025, he was part of a House delegation that visited the United States for discussions aimed at improving parliamentary collaboration and governance.

The delegation’s engagements included meetings with members of the US Congress and the Heritage Foundation, where discussions touched on public policy, education, inflation, border security and electoral integrity.

The lawmaker has also advocated diplomatic engagement over issues affecting Nigeria-US relations. Following the US decision to review visa privileges for Nigerian citizens, the parliamentary friendship group supported efforts to engage American authorities on the matter.

The group also announced plans for an economic and investment summit to bring together policymakers, investors and other stakeholders to explore trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.

The House of Representatives has continued to pursue parliamentary diplomacy as a means of supporting Nigeria’s international partnerships and creating opportunities for economic cooperation.

Clark’s meeting with Abbas is expected to provide another opportunity to strengthen institutional ties and explore areas of mutual interest between Nigeria and the United States.

Further details of the discussions and specific investment areas to be explored during the visit were not provided in the information available.
