Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has promised to support the mother of Ifeanyi Nwolie, his supporter, who was shot dead during a political activity in Enugu State, pledging to help fill the void left by her son.
Obi gave the assurance during a visit to the bereaved mother after Nwolie was buried in Afa, Udi Local Council Area of Enugu State.
He reportedly pledged financial support equivalent to 15 months of the allowance that Nwolie usually sent to his mother, covering the period through December 2027.
“My humble pledge to the mother is that God Almighty, who pleased to bring Ifeanyi home, has also given her another son in me to support her, as Ifeanyi used to,” Obi said.
In a statement yesterday, Obi disclosed that he travelled from the United Kingdom to Nigeria and proceeded to Enugu to attend the burial.
He said Nwolie was among his supporters who took part in an NDC political activity on October 10, 2026, which was marred by violence.
“Tragically, he was shot,” Obi said, describing the killing as a painful reminder of the human cost of Nigeria’s toxic political climate.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, the former Anambra State governor urged political candidates across all levels to reject violence, ethnic division and religious bigotry.
He said campaigns should be driven by ideas and policies that improve the country, rather than by hostility and intimidation.
“Democracy thrives when citizens can freely express their political choices and participate in the electoral process without fear,” he said.
Obi added that the manner in which political leaders attain office mattered more than the offices they sought to occupy.
He also warned that weakening the rule of law could lead to disorder and anarchy, urging Nigerians to work towards a country where human life is valued above political ambition.
