600 Nigerian soldiers head to India for specialised training

Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army is sending 600 soldiers to India for specialised military training aimed at improving their combat skills and preparing them to operate in challenging environments.

The first batch of 300 personnel departed Abuja on Thursday aboard two Indian Air Force aircraft, while arrangements were being made for the remaining soldiers to travel to India.
The troops left through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, aboard a C-17A aircraft and an Airbus A321A.

Major General Umar Yusuf, Coordinator of Nigerian Army Military Training and Simulation at Army Headquarters, represented the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, at the departure. The Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria was also present.

The training will focus on mountain and jungle warfare, which require soldiers to develop specialised techniques for navigating difficult terrain and conducting military operations in demanding conditions.

The programme is expected to strengthen the participants’ ability to operate in environments where dense vegetation, steep landscapes and other geographical challenges can affect military operations.

The deployment also highlights defence cooperation between Nigeria and India, particularly in military training and professional development.

With the planned arrival of the remaining 300 personnel, the total number of Nigerian soldiers participating in the programme will reach 600.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to enhance military training and equip personnel with specialised skills through international partnerships.
