What is the purpose of the Holy Scriptures?

Read Ps 19:7-14.

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; 8The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.11Moreover by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward.” (Ps 19:7-11)

Ps 19:7-11 When we think of the law, we often think of something that keeps us from having fun. But here we see the opposite—law that revives us, makes us wise, gives joy to the heart, gives light to the eyes, warns us, and rewards us. That’s because God’s laws are guidelines and lights for our path, rather than chains on our hands and feet. They point at danger and warn us, then point at success and guide us.

19:7-11 “The law of the Lord is perfect.” The revelation of God’s law (19:7-11) is clearer than the revelation from God’s creation (19:1-6). These verses speak of five facets of this greater revelation: (1) “The law”—reflects the moral character of God and is thus “perfect” in its life-giving influence on the soul (v. 7). (2) “The testimony”—represents God’s wisdom and will that are “trustworthy” for making wise and prudent decisions in life (v. 7). (3) “The statutes”—comprise God’s principles for “right” living that produce the “joy” of being alive and receiving his blessing (v. 8). (4) “The commandments of the Lord” radiate God’s light, thereby “enlightening the eyes” (v. 8) for living righteously in covenant relationships and in the wholesome “fear of the Lord” With enduring results (v.9). (5) “The judgments”—laws governing social life that insure justice and righteous treatment for the whole covenant community (v.9), being more “desired” or valuable than gold (v. 10).

Meditation on God’s word is a critical aspect of listening
Meditationis a critical aspect of listeningto God particularly after reading the word of God.

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (Jos 1:8)

“meditate in it day and night.” “Meditate” (Hebhagah) means to read quietly or to talk to yourself as you think. It involves reflecting upon God’s words and ways and applying them to every area of your life (Ps 1:2; 63:6; 77:12; 143:5).
