Bournemouth orchestrated the latest episode of Manchester United’s woeful start to the season as the Cherries secured maximum points and a clean sheet at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils were seeking redemption following the humiliating loss to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday evening but fell short to Marco Rose’s men, as they remain winless in eight games.
Bruno Fernandes, after his public criticism of Michael Carrick’s tactics against Como, was left on the bench for the entire duration of the match as the struggles of the club continued.
“Picking the team is always a difficult decision. We’ve got to make what we feel is the right one for the team to try to get the performance we want,” Carrick told Sky Sports.
It was a game filled with individual errors: misplaced passes, poor touches, lack of awareness, and poor defensive set-up, and the visitors didn’t hesitate to punish Michael Carrick’s men.
Brazilian winger Rayan put Bournemouth ahead in the 38th minute after he was left unmarked in the box from Justin Kluivert’s free kick into the box. Rayan rifled a one-time shot to beat Sanne Lammens at his near post.
Bryan Mbeumo’s attempt on goal a few minutes later was parried away by Djordje Petrovic as the Red Devils sought an equaliser before the break.
However, the visitors doubled the lead two minutes before half-time. Adrien Truffert pounced on the error of his countryman, Leny Yoro, found Marcus Tavernier free in the box, and the latter tapped the ball into the net to give the visitors another advantage.
Another error in Man Utd’s defense led to Evanilson’s goal two minutes after the restart, but the video assistant referee disallowed the goal for offside in the build-up.
The visitors scored their third eventually from another error. Evanilson pounced on Senne Lammens ‘ miscalculated clearance as he placed the ball into an empty net to deppen Micahel Carrick’s crisis.
The result leaves the Red Devils a point off the relegation zone as they occupy the 16th spot with seven points after eight matches.
Manchester United have officially registered the worst-ever start to a Premier League season in their history with seven points after eight matches. The previous record was nine set in the 1989–90 season.
Liverpool end Brighton’s unbeaten run.
Liverpool put an end to Brighton’s eight-game unbeaten run as the Reds cruised to their fourth straight win. An own goal by Pascal Gross and Alexander Isak’s sixth goal in the league gave the hosts a comfortable 2-0 win.
Gross turned the ball into his net in the 17th minute off a deflected shot, while Isak doubled the lead four minutes later with a simple tap-in into the back of the net from Bradley Barcola’s assist.
Liverpool climbed into the third spot on the log with 15 points after eight matches and are six points off league leaders Manchester City.
In other results, Hull City and Brentford settled for a one-all draw while Newcastle United added to Crystal Palace’s poor run of form with a 2-0 win at Selhurst Park.
