The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Borno state, has dismissed one of its candidate contesting for the state house of assembly, to represent Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC), Mohammed Bunu for openly campaigning for the Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar.
In a letter dated 25th of October, 2026, addressed to Mohammed Bunu, signed by the state Deputy Chairman of the NDC, Umar Fema and made available to our correspondent on Sunday, the party said Bunu’s conduct was considered inconsistent with the Party’s constitution, rules, regulations, and established principles of discipline.
According to the letter, the matter concerned campaign material bearing the logo of the African Democratic Congress and the photographs and names of Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress.
The letter reads “the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Borno State Chapter, hereby formally communicates the Party’s disciplinary decision concerning allegations of anti-party activities
and conduct considered inconsistent with the Party’s Constitution,
rules, regulations, and established principles of discipline.
The decision, Fema said arises from a disciplinary matter initiated at the Hausari Ward level and subsequently referred to the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) Party leadership for investigation and further consideration.
“The matter concerns campaign material bearing the logo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the slogan “SABON TAFIYA, SABON SALO,” and the photographs and names of His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Hon. Mohammed Bunu” It said.
“The appearance of your name and photograph on the material raised concerns among the Party leadership regarding your political association, allegiance, loyalty, and commitment to the principles and interests of the Nigeria Democratic Congress” It added.
The letter said the NDC considers the matter a serious disciplinary issue requiring examination under its Constitution and established internal procedures.
“On 23 October 2026, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the Hausari Ward Executive invited you to appear before it and respond to the allegations concerning your alleged involvement in campaign activities associated with another political party. According to the report submitted by the Ward leadership, you did not appear to defend yourself” the letter stated.
Fema, however noted that following Bunu’s non-appearance, the Ward Secretary, Rabiu Umar, recommended disciplinary action and referred the matter to the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) Working Committee for
further consideration.
“On 24 October 2026, you were again invited to appear before an investigation committee to respond to the allegations.
“According to the report received by the Party leadership, you did not attend the proceedings. After considering the investigation committee’s report, the MMC Party Chairman, Hon. Adamu Ibrahim, endorsed the
recommendation for dismissal and forwarded the matter to the State level for further action in accordance with the Party’s Constitution” the letter said.
Fema explained that “in view of the allegations examined and the reports submitted through the Party’s disciplinary structure, the Party communicates its decision to dismiss you from the Nigeria Democratic Congress, subject to the applicable constitutional requirements and the authority of the competent Party organs”.
The notice, he said formally records the disciplinary action arising from the proceedings initiated at Hausari Ward and considered at the MMC level.
“You are expected to respect the Party’s established procedures and refrain from representing yourself as authorised to act on behalf of the NDC in any capacity affected by a valid and effective Party decision” the letter stated.
“For the avoidance of doubt, any action concerning your status as an NDC candidate must be distinguished from the separate question of termination or expulsion from Party membership” It noted
