The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council has warned against any attempt to postpone the January 16, 2027 presidential election, saying the Ebola outbreak should not be used to change the electoral timetable.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Director of Strategic Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the council alleged that INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan could be summoned to the Presidential Villa and pressured to shift the election. It did not provide evidence that such a meeting had been planned or that a postponement had been formally proposed.
The council urged Amupitan to reject any pressure to alter the date. “The election date belongs to Nigerians.
It must not be rewritten behind closed doors at the Villa,” the statement said.
It challenged President Tinubu to seek another term through the ballot box, arguing that voters should be able to assess his administration’s record at the scheduled election.
The council also said changing the timetable without a compelling reason could weaken public confidence in the electoral process.
The ADC campaign council acknowledged the seriousness of Ebola and called on health professionals to contain the outbreak.
It urged INEC to take precautions to protect voters and election workers while keeping to the published timetable.
The council further called on election observers to scrutinise any proposal to change the date and said such a decision should be supported by publicly available health evidence.
It claimed that the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control had said there was currently no reason to postpone the election.
The statement did not establish that the President had summoned the INEC chairman or that a formal request to postpone the election had been made.
It did not include responses from the Presidency or INEC.
