Chairman of Ifo Local Council in Ogun State, Kusimo Idris Olalekan, has called on the Lagos State Government to caution the Chairman of Ojodu Local Council over the erection of a signpost bearing the inscription, “Welcome to Lagos State,” at a disputed location along the Yakoyo–Ojodu Road.
Olalekan said the signpost had raised concerns about the boundary between Ogun and Lagos states, particularly around Yakoyo in Isheri-Ojodu Ward, which Ifo Local Council maintains falls within Ogun State’s territorial jurisdiction.
He warned that the signpost could confuse residents and road users about the boundary between the two neighbouring states, urging the authorities to resolve the dispute through established procedures.
The development comes amid an ongoing disagreement over the territorial limits of the two states in the area, following the construction of a road by the Ogun State Government under Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Ifo Local Council maintained that the disputed location falls within its jurisdiction and urged the Lagos State Government to intervene by asking the Ojodu council chairman to refrain from actions that could heighten tensions.
According to the council, the Yakoyo–Ojodu axis has been a source of concern over the years, with what it described as repeated attempts by Lagos State to assert authority over areas claimed by Ogun State.
The council cautioned that such developments could create uncertainty among residents and strain relations between the two states. It called on the governments and their respective local authorities to exercise restraint while seeking a lasting solution.
To establish the boundary, the council advocated an objective review of official records, approved surveys and other relevant government documents to determine the precise territorial limits of both states.
It said a resolution based on authoritative records would help prevent further misunderstandings, safeguard residents’ interests and promote peaceful coexistence between communities along the shared boundary.
Olalekan also urged the Lagos State Government to ensure that the actions of local council officials did not undermine cordial relations between the two states.
Reaffirming his council’s commitment to protecting the interests of residents, Olalekan said Ifo Local Council would continue to pursue the matter through appropriate channels while defending what it considers its territorial rights.
The council appealed to all parties to remain calm and respect established procedures pending an authoritative determination of the disputed boundary.
