NB honours 2025 Maltina Teacher of the Year with digital centre

Nigerian Breweries Plc

Nigerian Breweries Plc-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund has inaugurated a state-of-the-art digital learning centre at Wisdom International School of Excellence, Sauka, Lugbe, Abuja, in honour of the 2025 winner of the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition.

The inauguration of the centre marked a significant milestone in the trust fund’s sustained intervention in Nigeria’s education sector and reinforces the core philosophy of the Maltina Teacher of the Year initiative, that celebrating an outstanding teacher must translate into lasting institutional benefits for the school and community that produced such excellence.

The project, fully built and equipped by the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, is designed as a comprehensive digital learning ecosystem.

The centre is equipped with modern desktop computers, high-speed internet connectivity, an interactive smart screen for collaborative teaching and learning, a fully functional computer-based testing facility for examinations and assessments, digital learning and assessment software and tools, as well as a 10KVA solar-powered inverter system to guarantee uninterrupted power supply and ensure sustainability of learning activities.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held within the school premises in Lugbe, Abuja, the Head of Public, External and Government Affairs, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr Chukwuemeka Aniukwu, said the project exemplifies the trust fund’s deliberate commitment to ensuring that the impact of the competition goes far beyond the individual recognition of exemplary educators.

According to Aniukwu, while the competition identifies, honours and rewards outstanding teachers across the country, the accompanying school project ensures that the celebration leaves behind tangible infrastructure that expands access to quality, technology-enabled education.

“Through this project, we are extending the impact of the Maltina Teacher of the Year award beyond recognising outstanding teachers. We want to ensure that their achievements translate into lasting benefits for their schools and communities. By investing in digital learning, we are creating more opportunities for students to access technology-enabled education,” he said.

Aniukwu noted that the choice of a digital learning centre aligns with the evolving demands of teaching and learning in the 21st century, particularly the need to prepare Nigerian students for computer-based examinations and digital literacy, which have become prerequisites for academic progression and global competitiveness.

Deputy Director at the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr Iyabode Alli, commended the fund for its consistent and impactful contributions to the development of education in Nigeria.

Alli emphasised the critical importance of digital learning infrastructure in improving teaching and learning outcomes, particularly at a time when the Federal Government is driving reforms under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative and the transition of national examinations to computer-based testing.

She noted that public-private partnerships such as the one demonstrated by Nigerian Breweries remain vital to bridging the infrastructure gap in schools and accelerating Nigeria’s journey towards technology-driven education.

Also speaking, the Head of Academics at Wisdom International School of Excellence, Mrs Adesuwa Ogwu, expressed appreciation to Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund for citing the project in the school in recognition of Yusuf’s achievement.

Ogwu stated that the centre would significantly strengthen the school’s capacity to deliver digital learning, enhance students’ computer proficiency, improve preparation for external examinations, and support teachers in adopting innovative, technology-enabled pedagogy.

She assured the trust fund that the school management would ensure proper maintenance and optimal utilisation of the facility for the benefit of students, teachers and the wider Sauka-Lugbe community.
