Why CloveKids blends local manufacturing of dolls and African storytelling

CloveKids International, a Nigerian children’s brand, is building a portfolio of locally made dolls, children’s books and creative products designed to promote African identity, inclusion and imagination.

With over six years of experience in doll development, the company has created 14 doll designs and has six locally made products in its portfolio, including dolls. Its work reflects an effort to develop children’s products that represent African children’s identities and experiences while contributing to the growth of local manufacturing and creative enterprise.

Its latest offerings include Tara, a Nigerian-made fabric doll, and The Garden of Tomorrow, an illustrated children’s storybook. Together, the products reflect CloveKids’ broader vision of combining culturally relevant play materials with storytelling that encourages children to embrace their identities and imagine new possibilities.

The company’s doll designs celebrate African features and diversity, including representation of children with albinism and vitiligo. CloveKids believes that toys and stories can influence how children understand identity, belonging and their place in the world, making representation an important part of children’s everyday experiences.

Beyond physical products, the company plans to explore opportunities in animation and other media formats to expand the reach of African characters, cultures and stories. Its long-term ambition is to build a children’s brand that connects locally made products with storytelling and creative content.

CloveKids’ approach also reflects the potential of Nigerian manufacturing to serve local markets while creating opportunities for wider growth. By developing and producing children’s products in Nigeria, the company aims to contribute to an ecosystem that supports domestic makers and suppliers, develops practical skills and strengthens creative businesses.

The company believes that Nigerian-made children’s products can reach wider African and international markets with appropriate investment, production infrastructure and stronger supply chains. However, it acknowledges that production costs, access to materials and the ability to scale while keeping products affordable remain challenges for local manufacturers.

According to the company, manufacturing partnerships, strategic investment and stronger local supply networks could help address some of these challenges and improve the capacity of Nigerian businesses to develop and distribute locally made products.

Sustainability is another area of focus for CloveKids. The company has begun repurposing unused fabrics in its production process as part of efforts to make better use of available materials and reduce avoidable waste.

Although the initiative is still at an early stage, it reflects the company’s interest in incorporating more responsible resource management into product development. CloveKids is exploring ways to reuse excess fabric and consider material sourcing and resource efficiency as its production capacity and product range expand.

The company describes sustainability as an ongoing area of development, with plans to explore further opportunities to reduce waste while maintaining product quality and supporting the growth of its business.

CloveKids also sees storytelling as a means of encouraging creativity, curiosity and forward thinking among children. Its storybook, The Garden of Tomorrow, reflects this approach by inviting young readers to explore possibilities and imagine the future they want to help create.

The company believes that helping children see themselves represented in toys and stories can support a stronger sense of identity while encouraging them to imagine themselves as future creators, innovators, problem-solvers and leaders.

As it develops its products and production capabilities, CloveKids is seeking opportunities for collaboration in manufacturing, material sourcing, distribution, investment, education and children’s media development. Such partnerships, the company believes, could help expand access to Nigerian-made children’s products and strengthen the capacity to produce and distribute them at a larger scale.

CloveKids International produces dolls, books and creative products that celebrate African identity, encourage inclusion and inspire children’s imagination. With 14 doll designs developed and six locally made products in its portfolio, including dolls, the company is working to build a Nigerian children’s brand that combines local production, culturally relevant storytelling and an emerging commitment to more responsible use of materials.
