The National Sports Commission (NSC) and the National Institute for Sports (NIS), on Friday, celebrated the appointment of Samson Adamu as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

They described the appointment as a landmark achievement for Nigeria and a major boost to the country’s influence in international sports administration.

Adamu’s confirmation, announced on October 29, 2026, makes him the first Nigerian to occupy the influential position in CAF’s 70-year history, placing the country at the centre of the continental football body’s administrative leadership.

The Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, and his counterpart at the NIS, Comrade Philip Shaibu, separately congratulated Adamu, describing his emergence as a recognition of his competence, professional experience and years of dedication to football development.

Olopade said the appointment represented a moment of national pride and demonstrated the growing depth of Nigerian expertise in continental sports governance.

He noted that Adamu’s emergence was particularly significant for the next generation of Nigerian sports administrators, as it demonstrated that the country’s sports sector offers opportunities for professional growth and international recognition.

Olopade said: “On behalf of all Nigerians, I congratulate Samson Adamu on this appointment. It is a proud moment for Nigeria. It is encouraging to see a Nigerian rise to such a strategic position in African football through years of hard work, competence and commitment.

“This is the kind of achievement that should inspire young Nigerians to understand that sports administration offers enormous opportunities for professional growth and international recognition.”

The NSC boss added that Adamu’s emergence reinforced Nigeria’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to the leadership and development of sports across Africa.

Also speaking, Shaibu described Adamu’s confirmation as a significant milestone for Nigeria and African football, noting that it reflected the country’s growing international recognition and influence in the administration of the game.

He studied Business Management and Computer Science at the American University of Paris before obtaining a postgraduate qualification through the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, graduating in 2009.

Before joining CAF, Adamu built his career in sports marketing and event management through Kinetic Sport Management, where he played a leading role in establishing and organising Copa Lagos, an international beach soccer tournament that helped raise Nigeria’s profile in the sport.

He joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions and later served as Director of Tournaments and Events, overseeing key aspects of competition planning, match operations and tournament delivery

Adamu became Acting General Secretary in March 2026 following the resignation of Véron Mosengo-Omba before his confirmation as the substantive office holder.

His appointment is widely regarded as a major achievement for Nigerian football administration, placing a Nigerian at the helm of CAF’s day-to-day administration and offering an opportunity to contribute further to the growth of football across Africa.
