The Giving Tide proposes six free community stores across Lagos

Oluwadamilola Omokore, Founder and Creative Director of Epiphanic Concepts

A Nigerian community-focused initiative, The Giving Tide, is exploring plans to open six temporary community stores across Lagos State to promote dignified giving, support vulnerable households, and strengthen community solidarity.

The proposed Lagos rollout, currently under discussion, will serve as the inaugural pilot of The Tide Initiative, developed and championed by Epiphanic Concepts, a Nigerian company specialising in creative strategy, public relations and entertainment.

The programme is designed to provide a platform through which individuals, families, businesses and organisations can donate useful household items for redistribution to people in need.

At the centre of the initiative is the proposed Giving Tide Store, a temporary mobile facility where eligible individuals and families can select essential items, including clothing, footwear, books, toys, bedding and other household materials, free of charge.

Unlike conventional donation programmes that distribute pre-packaged items, the model allows beneficiaries to choose what they need, with emphasis on personal preferences, dignity and respect.

According to the organisers, donated items will undergo inspection, cleaning, sorting and repairs where necessary before being made available for redistribution.

The approach is intended to ensure that recipients receive items that are relevant to their circumstances, rather than being restricted to predetermined donation packages.

A parent, for instance, could select clothing in the appropriate sizes for their children, while another household could prioritise bedding or other essential items based on its immediate needs.

Speaking on the philosophy behind the project, Oluwadamilola Omokore, Founder and Creative Director of Epiphanic Concepts, said the initiative was designed to make giving more meaningful while encouraging stronger relationships within communities.

“Giving should make people feel supported, not diminished. We want to create an experience where families can choose what is useful to them, while those who wish to give have a thoughtful way to contribute.

“For me, The Giving Tide is also about reviving the spirit of brotherhood. There is real strength in a community where people willingly look out for one another, whether they contribute an item, their time, their skills or other resources,” she said.

The proposed Lagos pilot is expected to feature six community activations, with two planned for each of the state’s three senatorial districts.

However, the locations, dates and participation arrangements are still subject to planning and the partnerships required to implement the programme.

The initiative is expected to support households experiencing economic hardship, including displaced persons and families facing other challenging circumstances, through a needs-based selection process.

Although Lagos is being considered for the first phase, the organisers intend to develop a flexible model that can be adapted to communities in other states and regions across Nigeria.

Beyond its social objectives, The Giving Tide also seeks to promote environmental sustainability by encouraging the reuse and restoration of household items that might otherwise be discarded.

The organisers believe that extending the useful life of donated possessions could help reduce avoidable waste while providing practical assistance to households in need.

For Epiphanic Concepts, which has experience in creative strategy, public relations and event management, the project represents an effort to extend its expertise in bringing people together into community development and social impact.

Operating under the philosophy, “A Tide of Kindness. A Culture of Giving,” the initiative ultimately seeks to establish a culture in which generosity becomes a shared community responsibility rather than an occasional response to hardship.

Its organisers believe that through voluntary contributions and collective participation, everyday acts of kindness can strengthen social bonds and promote a greater sense of belonging.
