When the All Progressives Congress (APC) which is an amalgam of different political parties was about to be formed, Nigerians, especially the political class expressed deep concerns and reservations.

The concerns include how the strange bedfellows in the party will manage their diverse political interests for the survival of the party, and progress of the country, if electoral victory comes their way.

With overwhelming victory in the last general elections, many Nigerians have expected the party to take off on sound footing. But that has not been the case as the election cum appointment of the principal officers of the National Assembly has continued to expose the party’s leadership ineptitude, and division within.

Not even the Presidency, APC governors, and the party leadership’s interventions in the crisis during the party’s recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting have provided the needed solution to the lingering NASS crisis.

Having failed to get their act right before the crisis broke, many Nigerians have expected that the peace moves initiated after the party’s NEC meeting will bring the party’s different factions in both chambers of National Assembly together. Ahead of next week resumption of the National Assembly, after another postponement last week, the crisis seems not to be abating.

Not even the peace committees headed by the governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and his Sokoto counterpart, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal have come out with any workable solutions to the crisis. The slightest seeming progress witnessed so far was the concession of the House leader, and other positions to the Loyalists group led by Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila by the Consolidation group led by Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

But that is not without a caveat, which the Loyalists group has vowed not to accept. In the Senate, the Unity Forum loyal led by Senator Ahmed Lawan had been threatening brimstone ahead of next week resumption.

The Like-Minds group backing the Senate President, Bukola Saraki appears not to be lying low on the crisis. The alleged forgery of the Senate Standing Rules by the senate leadership, which has been investigated by the Police and the report being awaited will further divide the two factions.

Also likely to create more tension is the issue of the majority leader, its deputy, majority chief whip and its deputy which Saraki has appointed, contrary to the directive of the party leadership. So disturbing and surprising, is the ostrich being played by the Presidency, and the APC leadership ahead of next week NASS resumption. It appears they have lost their voices on how to resolve the crisis and have decided to sit on the fence.

Not even the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is insulated from the crisis over the choice of minority leader, its deputy, minority chief whip and its deputy. There have been intrigues among the PDP leaders and senators on who occupies these positions ahead of next week resumption.

It has led to legal tussles and created cracks among the party senators and leaders. As thing stands, it is not out of place that Nigerians may witness another round of drama in the National Assembly next week.
