THE Ayangburen of Ikorodu Kingdom, Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi, has enjoined its youths and residents of the town to rejuvenate and reposition the culture and tradition of Ikorodu to an enviable position.
Oba Shotobi stated this at the weekend during the formal inauguration of Ikorodu Renaissance Project (IREP), held at his palace, assuring them of the community’s support, in their bid to prosecute a rebirth of the culture and tradition of the ancient town.
While describing the project as a nobel objective, he lamented that there is no proper record of the historical and tourism sites of the community, noting that it is high time the youths showcase these heritages because they still have a long way to go.
Earlier, the convener, who is the Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly, Sanai Agunbiade, said the project was propelled due to the passive position of his people in projecting its rich tradition, culture and natural endowment.
For some years, I have observed with trauma the dwindling awareness and unconscious erosion of the culture and tradition of Ikorodu amongst the present generation. Surprisingly, the older generation that should enlighten the youth and stand in the vanguard of the propagation of this culture are displaying attitudes of cold complicity and mute indifference.
“This has propelled me into taking a decision to set in motion a mechanism to prosecute a rebirth of the culture and tradition of Ikorodu that is fast going into oblivion.”
This mechanism is branded as Ikorodu Renaissance Project.”
According to him, the objective of the project include; identifying and propagating the numerous tourist potentials of the ancient town, with a view to awakening consciousness to them; documenting and publishing the cultural, traditional and natural monuments andfestivals that could attract tourism to Ikorodu; seeking the attention of government and securing their assistance for the propagation and projection of outstanding monuments and traditional festival; and immortalising individual Ikorodu indigenes that have attained remarkable feat in the history and development of Ikorodu.
Agunbiade assured that the Renaissance Scouts will avoid veryclearly, the sentiments and controversies of history, adding that theywill concern themselves purely with materials and facts that couldfurther favourably project Ikorodu and engender its propagation fortourism and economic growth.
