Calls for arrest of AKPD officials
A CIVIC action group aimed at promoting democracy, transformation agenda and good governance in Nigeria, Move on Nigeria, has accused the Obama administration of fuelling political tension in the country to achieve its alleged prediction of Nigeria’s disintegration in 2015.
In a statement by its National Co-ordinator, Mr. Clem Aguiyi, the group accused the United States (U.S.) of being meddlesome in Nigeria’s election and internal affairs, alleging that a political consulting firm founded by Obama administration confidant, David Axelrod, has been far more involved in backing controversial Nigerian presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, than previously admitted by the US.
The statement said: “It is interesting that the Obama administration that has refused to do anything to help Nigeria in the fight against insurgency, instead, it has continued to publicly magnify every failure Nigeria’s government experienced. It is also working behind the scene to assist Buhari, a former coup plotter and dictator who ruled Nigeria with iron fist to unseat the incumbent President.
“The Obama administration cannot pretend not to know that the Buhari military government was known for harshly cracking down on civil rights, arresting opposition forces and intimidating critical journalists.
“Axelrod’s firm, the Chicago-based AKPD, has admitted to doing work on behalf of Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) in the past, but claimed to have ceased its ties in March 2014 after the Islamist terror group, Boko Haram, kidnapped hundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls.
“With the elections now delayed for another six weeks amid INEC’s unpreparedness and security concerns related to Boko Haram, we wish to raise new questions about AKPD’s work on behalf of the APC and Buhari, who previously rose to power in the mid-1980s after leading a military coup.”
“Our intelligence report obtained from sources familiar with the APC’s campaign say that the party has been trying to keep AKPD’s ongoing work quiet. It is rumored that AKPD employees are being housed in an APC compound located in Lagos, according to multiple sources.
“We today face a different kind of siege and insurgency. We call on the DSS and other security agencies to search for these political mercenaries, arrest and bring them to justice now”, the statement further said.
