Some members of Benue State House of Assembly, yesterday, tried to embarrass the governor, Dr. Samuel Ortom, with an impeachment move, a development that attracted widespread condemnation and raised apprehensions over the 2019 polls.

Most observers faulted the precipitate action of the legislators, just as the constitutionality of the process became a topic of discussion among lawyers.

Dean of Faculty of Law, Lagos State University (LASU), Prof Funminiyi Adeleke, said the removal of a governor was not a simple task that can be undertaken within a day.

Citing Section 188 of the Constitution, he said the governor or deputy governor would be removed whenever he or she was served a notice of any allegation in writing signed by not less than one-third of the members of the House of Assembly, stating that he or she is guilty of gross misconduct in the performance of the functions of his office, detailed particulars of which shall be specified.
