Yari, N’Assembly members shun exercise
ALL Progressives Congress (APC) has won all the chairmanship seats in 14 local councils in the election conducted in Zamfara State on Saturday.
The party also won all the 147 councillorship seats across the 147 political wards of the state.
The result was announced yesterday by the Chief Returning Officer of Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission, Alhaji Garba Muhammad Danbura
“The chairmanship seats of last Saturday’s local council election were all won by APC candidates having satisfied the election requirements and gotten high number of votes,” he said.
He said 14 registered political parties participated in the councils election, and commended the parties for their maturity during the exercise.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which is the leading opposition party in the state declined to participate in the election.
The election, as observed by our correspondents recorded poor turn out of voters in almost all the polling units visited in the state.
However, Governor Abdulaziz Yari did not participate in the election.
The three senators and seven House of Representatives members from the state were also absent at the election.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission (ZASIEC) did not announce the number of political parties expected to field candidates for the polls.
Only the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presented candidates.
NAN correspondent who monitored the poll in Gusau recalled that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) issued a statement on Friday that the party would not participate in the polls.
The statement was signed by the state chairman of the party Alhaji Hassan Nasiha.
The party hinged its decision to boycott the polls on the fact that it is challenging the victory of Governor Yari in the 2015 governorship election at the Supreme Court.
“Participating in the elections will amount to giving recognition to the leadership of the incumbent government in the state,” Nasiha said.
