Eagles upbeat, as coaches choose new assistant captain

OlisehGOING by the optimism in the Super Eagles’ camp that Nigeria will be among the winners at the Rwanda 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which kicks off on January 16, in Kigali, the team has been training twice daily since they relocated to Pretoria, South Africa at the weekend.

The Eagles will meet South Africa Premier League side, University of Pretoria, this morning in a friendly aimed at getting the boys ready for the games against Angola and Cote d’Ivoire tomorrow and January 11 respectively.

Speaking on his team’s readiness for the CHAN, central defender, Samson Gbadebo, assured that Nigeria will get at least a bronze medal, adding that the Eagles have the quality in players and coaches to lift the coveted trophy they came close to winning in the last championship in South Africa.

“I strongly believe we will come back from the African Nations Championship in Rwanda with the coveted trophy.

“The team spirit is quite high and the quality of training extensive coupled with the quality coaches in the team.

“There is nothing to worry over our group’s opponents, we will take the matches one at a time starting with a win against Niger then taking it up from there to the clashes against the 2011 winners, Tunisia and Guinea.

“If you compare our league with our opponents the Nigerian league is highly rated than the others I think we have what it takes to win the African title in Rwanda,” the Lobi Stars’ defender said.

Also speaking on the team’s chances, FC IfeanyiUbah forward, Bright Onyedikachi, says the national team’s two-week training camp in Pretoria, South Africa will help the squad’s cause before they jet off to Rwanda for the African Nations Championship.

“The hotel is cozy, the weather is okay. We are in South Africa so that we can adapt to the weather challenges in Rwanda and from what I’ve seen so far, the decision to come here is spot-on.

“Being in South Africa will help our outing in Rwanda because they have similar weather. The reception we got from Nigerians living here in South Africa was fantastic,” the pacey striker added.

A top team official said coach Sunday Oliseh has been most impressed with the entire squad.
