The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into the train derailment that occurred along the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor on Monday and has recovered critical evidence while completing key on-site investigative activities as part of its probe into the incident.

The Bureau in a statement signed by the Director Director, Public Affairs and Family Assistance Mrs Foluke Adebayo-Arowojobe disclosed that investigation has advanced significantly following the deployment of its team to the accident scene.

The Director-General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr who led the investigation team to the site was accompanied by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Mr Kayode Opeifa, and the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Funsho Adebiyi.

According to the Bureau, investigators documented the accident scene, examined affected rail equipment and infrastructure, collected operational and technical information, and interviewed personnel connected with the train’s operation.

The statement stated that evidence obtained from witness interviews, operational records, maintenance documentation and other investigative sources would undergo detailed examination by its specialists.

Speaking at the accident scene, Badeh expressed condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones and passengers affected by the derailment.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families who have lost loved ones, those who sustained injuries, and every passenger affected by this tragic occurrence. We understand the pain and uncertainty such an event brings, and we want the public to be assured that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has commenced a thorough and evidence-based investigation,” he said.

He added that the Bureau would follow the facts wherever they lead and develop actionable safety recommendations aimed at preventing a recurrence of similar incidents on the nation’s railway network.

As part of the visit, the NSIB chief met with passengers affected by the derailment and commiserated with bereaved families, conveying the condolences of both the Bureau and the Federal Government.

He also visited injured victims receiving treatment at healthcare facilities, offering support and reassurance.

The Bureau said it is working closely with the Nigerian Railway Corporation, the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the Federal Ministry of Health and other federal and state agencies throughout the investigation process.

NSIB also acknowledged the cooperation of the NRC, the Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Nigerian Air Force, whose support facilitated access to operational facilities, information and other resources required for the investigation.

The Bureau stressed that the investigation is safety-focused and non-punitive, explaining that its objective is not to assign blame or determine civil or criminal liability but to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident and identify factors that contributed to it.

It added that upon completion of the investigation, its findings and safety recommendations would be made public to strengthen rail transport safety and reduce the likelihood of future occurrences.

The NSIB said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
