The Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra, Mr Chuma Agupugo, has described the defection of Sen. Uche Ekwunife to the party as a “good omen” for the APC in the state.
Agupugo stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Wednesday, following Ekwunife’s formal defection from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).
He said that the APC had formerly received Ekwunife and presented her with a broom to sweep away “bad leadership” and usher in a change of government in the state in 2017.
The party scribe expressed confidence that APC would win the Anambra Central Senatorial District poll, which Ekwunife would be seeking to re-contest on the platform of her new political party.
“Ekwunife’s entry into the party portends good omen for the APC as it will further strengthen the party for future elections.
“She is an amazon in Anambra politics.
“We now expect that she will join forces with the party to sweep away the evil machinations of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) government in the state.
“The party is completely prepared and ready for the senatorial election and she also has a chance as every other party member to excel,” Agupugo said.
Agupugo said that the party was still waiting for INEC’s directive on a date to conduct the party’s primary for the senatorial election.
The party’s scribe disclosed that two other persons had indicated interest to seek for the party’s ticket at the primary.
NAN recalls that Ekwunife, who was inaugurated as a senator in June 2015, had her election nullified by the Court of Appeal in Enugu on Dec. 6, 2015.
The court had nullified the election on the grounds of irregularities and ordered for fresh election in the senatorial district within 90 days.
