THE Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has frowned on alleged moves by Governor Nyeson Wike to allegedly stall prosecution of three notorious armed robbery gang operating within Port Harcourt metropolis.
The party also indicted government officials for the security challenges facing the state.
State APC Chairman, Davies Ikanya, in a statement yesterday in Port Harcourt, warned that the alleged dropping of the charges would encourage more hoodlums to kill and maim innocent residents.
He, however, called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Chief of Army Staff and the Director General of State Security Service to “take note of the injustice the alleged act by Governor Wike will mean to those killed.”
Ikanya recalled that on November 19, 2015, three members of a notorious armed robbery gang operating in Port Harcourt were arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Rivers State Police Command.
According to him: “The suspects, who subsequently made confessional statements, were arrested and several arms and ammunition found on them.
“Investigations by the Nigeria Police reportedly revealed that the suspects killed officers of the Police and Nigerian Army before carting away their arms in various operations in the past.
“The police stated that other criminal activities carried out by the gang were the murder in cold blood of several police and military personnel,” he said
Ikanya, however, that right from the day the suspects were arrested and two of them charged to court, there had been intense pressure from influential quarters to have them released.
