VGC celebrates 2018 cultural carnival for unity

It was a colourful and delightful display of cultural diversity, as well as scintillating musical performances recently at the 2018 Victoria Garden City (VGC) Cultural Carnival. The event also served to mark the Independence Day celebration.

The VGC Recreational Park, venue of the occasion, was filled to capacity, as there was a large turnout of people, especially VGC residents, friends, well-wishers and foreigners, who came to join in the merriment.

The Chairman, VGCPORA, Arc. Olusegun Ladega, explained that the aim of the cultural carnival was to promote unity and diversity in Nigeria.

He said: “We have 13 groups from different geographical zones: North, South, East and West, who showcased their cultural diversities.”

Describing culture as a way of life, Ladega said culture is an individual’s identity.

“It tells who you are and enables one to transfer to future generations,” he explained. “A society without cultural anchor tends to be very chaotic, which was why we have been challenged to pass our heritage to our children.”

He called on other communities to maintain good neighbourliness and communality.

“A community, where there is good neighbourliness, works much better, is secured and residents care for one another,” he said.

Another VGC resident, Engr. Gerald Akinyemi, said, “VGC residents are one big family. We are here for everyone,” describing the carnival as a huge success.

Highlights of the event include competition among represented geographical zones, recognition award for community service and cutting of cake for the Independence Day celebration.
