The Concerned Rivers People (CRP) has raised the alarm over alleged moves by some political actors to undermine the “Rainbow Coalition” ahead of the 2027 general elections in Rivers State.

The group alleged that some politicians and activists were holding private meetings aimed at countering the political structure led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike.

In a statement, CRP Publicity Secretary, Sunny Nwagbo, alleged that a former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) hosted a meeting at her residence involving political actors as part of efforts to strategise against the coalition.

The group alleged that another meeting was being planned at Heliconia Park Hotel, Eastern Bypass, Port Harcourt.

“Information at our disposal confirms that a meeting was held at the residence of a former Managing Director of NDDC to strategise against the Rainbow Coalition.

“We are also aware that another meeting is to hold at the Heliconia Park Hotel, Eastern Bypass,” Nwagbo said.

He warned that the alleged meetings and what he described as “backdoor politics” would not halt the activities of the coalition.

“Let it be known, the Rainbow Coalition has come to stay. These clandestine meetings and backdoor politics will not stop the will of the people; their plans will totally fail,” he said.

The allegations come amid intensifying political realignments in Rivers ahead of the 2027 elections, with the Rainbow Coalition emerging as one of the major political blocs seeking to determine the direction of the state’s politics.

The “Rainbow Coalition” is the name Wike and his allies have given to the broad political alliance operating in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections.

Rather than being a single registered political party, the coalition brings together politicians from different political platforms around a common political arrangement.

Wike has described the arrangement as a coalition of political forces working under a common interest, with the objective of coordinating candidates and electoral support.

In May, Wike said the coalition comprised politicians from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP) and Action Alliance (AA). He said the parties would collectively determine their governorship candidate rather than allow individual aspirants to dictate the process.

A key component of the coalition’s strategy has been its decision to support President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in 2027.

Wike said in May that the coalition had already agreed on Tinubu while discussions on the Rivers governorship candidate were continuing.
