It would be recalled that Chief Anenih had in a letter to EFCC last week, outlined how the sum of N260m was paid into his bank account from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) as well as how he disbursed the money according to instructions.
In a statement signed by the Executive Director, Hon. Chinwe Ugwu, and made available to journalists, CREI contended that apart from disclosing that he did not benefit from the largesse, Anenih displayed exemplary courage and contrition that removes any criminal undertone.
The group said Anenih deserves praise for joining in the fight against corruption stressing that by his action of voluntarily coming out to own up and explaining his role in the matter, the elder statesmen showed that he does not condone corruption.
CREI indicated that Anenih’s posture contrasts with the position of some people who collected part of the money and are busy denying or rejecting to cooperate with EFCC to get to the root of the arms fund misappropriation.
“Instead of crucifying them, people like Anenih should be commended for standing for the truth even in the face of obvious provocation, false allegations and deliberate attempt to soil his hard earned reputation,” the group noted.
