Old students of Methodist Girls’ High School, Yaba, Lagos, under the aegis of Old Girls Methodist Girls (OGMG 1978-1983) recently held a one-day mentoring and counselling programme for students of the school, as part of activities to celebrate 35 years of leaving their alma mater.

The programme, themed “Girls giving back,” saw business mogul, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika deliver the keynote address, while the convener of the Nous organisation, Mrs. Lade Olugbemi, led a counselling session with the students.

Awosika encouraged the students not to allow gender narratives distort their dreams and aspirations, challenging them to make good use of their stay in school.

“There are so many opportunities in the contemporary world, do not limit yourself because you are a female. There are so many things you can achieve as a girl-child. With hard work and determination, you can be whatever you want to be… the choice is yours to make. But you have to build a block at a time and seize any opportunity that comes your way. Also at this stage, which is a self-discovery stage, it is very important that you discover yourself. The ability to know what you are good at will lead your path positively and fruitfully.

“Being a career woman does not stop you from getting married or having children, you just have to stay focused. I have been married for 26 years and still counting and have not gotten to the peak of my career yet. Please do not allow anybody to limit your imagination, don’t worry about where you are now, worry about where you are going now, the OGMG 78/83 set organised this event for you to believe in yourselves and set example of what you want to be as girls,” she said.

The chair, contact and publicity sub-committee, Mrs. Moyo Ajijedidun said the old students understand the challenges of the girl-child in today’s world, the reason the programme was organised to mentor and help them make informed decisions that will guide them in the future.
