Doctors Protest Non-payment Of Salaries In Lagos

DOCTORS at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), last week, staged a peaceful protest over non-payment of salaries and other welfare packages. 

    Demonstrating peacefully in the hospital premises, the doctors said government is owing them seven months salary and would want it paid to enable them take care of their families.

  President, Resident Doctors Association (RDA), Dr. Moronkola Ramon Kolade, said the doctors have been patient enough and therefore have decided to call the attention of government and LUTH management to their plight. 

      He maintained that they have faithful discharged their duties and even went through the December festivities without their salaries. 

  Bemoaning the situation, he stressed: “We have decided that this cannot continue; if we keep quiet we would not receive our salaries. 

   “Some of our members have not received seven months; some six months and others four months salaries. We have families to feed and school fees to pay. As I speak, all our emergencies are working, accident, and children emergencies are working, so, we are not on strike,” he said.   

      Senior Registrar, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), Dr. Olatunde Olagbemi, said the backlog of salary is only observed by LUTH management alone and not in any other hospital in Lagos. 

     Angered by the situation, he noted that even if the money is missing, at least preventive measure should have been taken to ease the situation.
