The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi and vice presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso have met with the leaders of the opposition party.
Obi posted about the productive meetings on Nigeria’s June 12 Democracy Day with NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, and Kwankwaso to advance the “New Nigeria that is Possible.”
“Together Towards the New Nigeria That Is Possible: On this June 12, Democracy Day, I had useful meetings with my partners in the building of the New Nigeria that is Possible: our great party’s National Leader, H.E. Senator Seriake Dickson, and our party’s Vice Presidential candidate, H.E. Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso,” he said.
According to the former Governor of Anambra State, the four-month-old NDC, being a political party is positioned as a future-oriented vehicle requiring sacrifices, tolerance, and unity for purposeful leadership focused on productivity and democratic ideals.
“The NDC, as a party that is barely four months old, despite the challenges, remains the party of the future, and the fruitful discussions at the meetings clearly underscore this fact,” Obi said.
He stressed that the leaders and members of a committed political family must be willing to make sacrifices and show tolerance and accommodation, even in difficult circumstances.
According to him, this shared understanding is essential for building trust, strengthening unity, and sustaining the vision we collectively hold for national transformation.
“We are all committed to this goal. The NDC remains the vehicle that will convey Nigeria through purposeful, compassionate leadership, with firm commitment to productivity and democratic ideals towards the New Nigeria that is POssible,” Obi added.
Meanwhile, former Kano State Governor, Kwankwaso had reportedly threatened to leave the NDC after the party replaced several Kwankwasiyya faction candidates in Kano to enforce a pre-agreed 60/40 power-sharing formula favoring his bloc at 60%.
The NDC had replaced several candidates earlier submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State over an alleged breach of a power-sharing agreement, according to a report by the Dailypost, which sighted a document signed by the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga.
Mairiga said that the changes were made to reflect the earlier agreement on the distribution of party positions and elective tickets between the existing NDC structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc.
The document was copied to the National Leader of the opposition political party, Senator Seriake Dickson, Kwankwaso, and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman.
Under the revised list, the party approved the following for Federal Constituencies: Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani – Kumbotso; Nasiru Ali Ahmed – Nassarawa; Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id – Kano Municipal, Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim – Doguwa/Tudun Wada; Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar – Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa; Ibrahim Bashir Bango – Sumaila/Takai and Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata – Gwale.
Adjustments were also made to the Kano State House of Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo, and Dawakin Kudu constituencies.
According to the NDC, there was a standing agreement for elective positions and party offices to be shared on a 60-40 basis, with the Kwankwasiyya bloc receiving 60% and the original party structure retaining 40%.
