THE air traffic control managers from the Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt airports have signed a Letters of Procedure expected to enhance safe air-transport in the country.
The letter was signed in Lagos during the week at the headquarters of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).
The deal facilitated by NAMA, spelt out conditions for sharing air traffic services by the four airports. It also specified procedures to be followed in the event of total or partial communication failure between air traffic control services unit and an aircraft among others.
Speaking at occasion, the General Manager, Air Traffic Control, Ifeanyi Okwor explained that the signing was informed by recent changes in the operation of the airspace among which is the extension of en-route radar service to 24 hours daily.
The general manager opined that there is the need to capture all these changes in the document especially as it has to do with the operational relationship between the Air Control sections at the airports, which is part of ICAO’s requirement, aimed at enhancing seamlessness and safety in air traffic management.
