On March 17, upon the request of the Government of the Republic of Malawi, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency relief goods (tents, portable jerry cans, water purifiers and plastic sheets) through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to the Republic of Malawi in response to the damages caused by the flood and landslide disaster due to the Cyclone Freddy.

In light of the humanitarian perspective and the close relations between Japan and the Republic of Malawi, Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance to the Republic of Malawi to support people affected by the flood and landslide disaster.

Overview of Damage

In the Republic of Malawi, the flood and landslide disaster due to the Cyclone Freddy, which made landfall on the country on March 12, 2023, has resulted in a large number of those affected including the loss of lives, and significant physical damage. According to the Government of the Republic of Malawi, as of March 16, 2023, 326 people died, 183,158 people evacuated, and 501,775 people were affected.
