Chemical workers seek stakeholders’ engagement to sustain jobs
The Chemical and Non-Metallic Products Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (CANMPSSAN) has called for effective engagement between management and employees of organisations in the industry to reduce job losses.
This is coming on the heels of a high rate of redundancy in the sector due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic that has crippled the sector significantly.
President of CANMPSSAN, Segun David, at the union’s 25th Annual National Management/Industrial Relations Seminar held in Asaba, Delta State, lamented that the year had been difficult for Nigerian workers who had to deal with the challenges of job loss, reduced salaries, and zero appraisals.
He said workers who sacrificed a lot during the lockdown to survive should not be at the receiving end of the economic downturn.
“We therefore reject being used as scapegoats whenever management is contemplating cost cutting measures. There is a need for the stakeholders (the management and employees) to engage in meaningful deliberation that will improve efficiency and reduce incidences of job losses,” he said.
He said the three-day programme themed ‘Critical Analysis of Post-COVID-19 on Socio-economic Challenges and its Impact on the Organised Labour-Chemical and Non-Metallic Products Experience’ was organised to draw the government’s attention to the challenges facing the sector. He added that the union would also devise ways of addressing the challenges confronting the sector.
General Manager, Human Asset Management (HAM), Dangote Cement, Femi Adekunle, said that redundancy is not an easy choice for the companies, who he said hold their employees in high esteem.
“Workers are our most essential part of a company; they are the golden hens that lay the golden eggs. Without them, there wouldn’t be any production. But in a situation where a company’s existence is threatened, there is nothing the company can do than to cut its payroll,” he said.
