Former governors of Ogun state, Gbenga Daniel and Olusegun Osoba, have commended the resilience of Champion Newspapers Limited amid Nigeria’s challenging economic climate.
They made the remarks at the newspaper’s yearly awards held recently in Lagos, which recognised excellence and service in different sectors of the Nigerian economy. At the event, over 50 individuals and organisations were honoured for their outstanding performances across government, the corporate sector and private enterprises.
Daniel, who chaired the event, described the awards as an event dedicated to celebrating excellence, courage and enterprise, as well as individuals whose contributions have helped shape the nation’s progress.
“In an industry that is often turbulent and unforgiving, the survival and continued relevance of Champion for decades is no small achievement,” he said.
He paid tribute to the late founder of Champion Newspapers, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, noting that his foresight, courage and belief in responsible journalism helped build one of Nigeria’s enduring media institutions.
According to him, the newspaper has remained steadfast, resilient and consistent despite changes in media technology and the challenging operating environment for journalism in the country.
Also, Osoba praised the management and staff of the print medium, saying the ability to sustain a news publication for decades reflects dedication and commitment.
In her welcome address, the Group Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Champion Newspapers Limited, Nwadiuto Iheakanwa, said the awards were designed to honour leadership, innovation, integrity and service across various sectors of the economy.
In a separate remark, Nigerian musician and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, disclosed that the late founder of Champion Newspapers, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, was among the first people who supported his career.
Charly Boy, who received the Champion of the Voiceless Award, recalled that Iwuanyanwu provided him with financial and emotional support during the most difficult period of his life.
Among the award recipients were the Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Adaora Umeoji and Ahmed Usman Ododo, Governor of Kogi State, who won the ‘Governor of the Year in Youth Development and Security’ among others.
