THE National Directorate of Employment (NDE) is partnering Career Intelligence to boost the deployment of scientific analysis to combat the scourge of unemployment in the country.

The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has also approved the appointment of Kunle Obayan as the Acting Director General of the NDE. Obayan was until his appointment, the Director in charge of Rural Employment Promotion department of the NDE. Obayan assumes office this morning (Tuesday), December 1, 2015.

Speaking on the need to adopt scientific approach to tackle unemployment when he paid a courtesy visit to the Bwari Skills acquisition centre of the Career Intelligence, the out-going Director General of the Directorate, Abubakar Mohammed, said he begun the process of partnering with the Career Intelligence because the evolving nature of unemployment.

He said: “I hope that my successor in office will continue to collaborate with Carrier Intelligence so that the company can replicate this kind of training methods in all the NDE training centres across the country. With what we have seen so far, the Centre is already achieving some of the objectives we were targeting within just three months of operation. There is need to adopt scientific approach to tackle unemployment. We were sending our trainees to master craftsmen and women before we decided to build our own skills centres because we wanted to take ownership of the standard.

Again, now we find that it is even better to adopt scientific approach to solving unemployment challenge in our country and that is what informed this partnership.”

Abubakar, who bows out of the Directorate this morning after spending eight years in the saddle as the Director General, said time has come for all the stakeholders in the employment generation initiatives, local and state governments to collaborate with Carrier Intelligence to further expand the scientific approach.

He explained that the system offered by Career Intelligence is a bridge between knowledge obtained in school and knowledge required in workplace.

He added: “What Carrier Intelligence is doing is something that is probably strange to the system we are used to in this country. We have a system where we go to school from primary to the university level without having any knowledge about ability and how our education we have acquired can aid the manifestation of our individual abilities via the carrier we have chosen. In the system that the Carrier Intelligence runs, ability on possible employability is given priority. By so doing, people can now discover their innate ability on time and imbued to into the kind of job they want to do. This enable people discover themselves on time instead of embarking on employment journeys where most people do not realize their potential on time.”

The NDE boss hinted that the NDE had identified lack of skills and skills mismatch as major factors driving unemployment in Nigeria, saying, “but Carrier Intelligence is tackling that through job profiling and other tools, which makes alignment of potential easy and productive.”

On his part the Chief Executive Officer of Career Intelligence, David Yusuf said Carrier Intelligence is ensuring that everybody that participates in the training has the opportunity of getting either part time or full time jobs after the training.

He said: “Within the last few months, we have completed a comprehensive orientation of all the trainees, done intensive skills analysis, job profiling and done introduction to all the courses we are mandates to run in this centre. What these steps allow to know about everyone here is that we now know those that are in line for their carrier pursuit and we know those that are not. We are not going to throw those that are not on their carrier path away just like that. We are going to re-direct them into the right direction.”

He stated that Career Intelligence has started an introduction to employability skills, which will help prepare the trainees for the challenges expected at workplaces. Such training entails curriculum vitae writing skill, interview skills and usage of information on job profiling.

Other skills taught at the Centre include career matching, job profiling, career coaching, career change, interview coaching and labour market information.
Yusuf informed that Career Intelligence is set to establish 10 career centres and job clinics in the country over the next 24 months.
