NDE to empower 40,000 youths, women in Borno

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE), will empower about 40,000 youths and women in Borno State, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, has said.

Speaking while empowerment scheme in Maiduguri, Borno State, the Minster said the empowerment programme would be executed by the Special Public Works (SPWs) of the directorate.
   
Flagging off an empowerment project recently at Damboa, Borno State, he said: “This special programme targets to empower women and youths in eight states of Adamawa, Borno, Edo, Ekiti, Katsina. Kwara, Jigawa, and Ebonyi.
    
Keyamo also disclosed that the over 1,000 beneficiaries are to be drawn from each of the five Local Government Areas in Borno, adding that the Federal Government’s job creation programme is in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to bringing out 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next decade.
   
Keyamo therefore encouraged youths and women to make good use of the distributed and disbursed empowerment kits and funds.Reiterating Damboa’s empowerment flag off, Governor Babagana Zulum, said: “This town used to be a stronghold of Boko Haram; the terrorists launch their attacks from the Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad region.”He said the decade-long insurgency has also destroyed 70 per cent of the state’s infrastructural facilities in the health, education and housing sectors.
    
Zulum noted that with relative peace and security, the State Government has embarked on resettlement and economic recovery projects and programmes.While assuring of partnership with NDE, he said the directorate should uplift the living conditions of youths through skills acquisition and trades.He also advised the 5,000 beneficiaries not to misuse the money given to them saying anyone found wanting will be delisted from the programme.
