The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and South Africa’s Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in social insurance administration, occupational health and safety, and employee compensation.
The agreement was signed at the end of a three-day Strategic Technical Engagement and Bilateral Sessions hosted by the NSITF in Abuja.
The engagement brought together the management and technical teams of both organisations, led by the Managing Director and Chief Executive of NSITF, Oluwaseun Faleye, and the Chief Executive Officer of RMA, Mr Bilal Adams.
Both institutions held technical sessions on social insurance administration, occupational health and safety systems, injury prevention programmes, rehabilitation frameworks, actuarial modelling, claims administration and digital transformation. The discussions culminated in the signing of the cooperation agreement.
Under the MoU, the two organisations agreed to collaborate on technical exchanges and capacity-building initiatives in occupational health and safety, rehabilitation, prevention programmes, actuarial modelling, claims management and digital transformation.
They also committed to sharing research materials, technical information and best practices in line with applicable confidentiality and regulatory requirements.
To coordinate the partnership, both organisations will establish a Joint Technical Working Group comprising representatives from relevant departments. The committee will be responsible for identifying and implementing collaborative activities arising from the agreement.
The MoU also provides for joint exploration of prevention and incentive-based models that could be adapted to Nigeria’s Employees’ Compensation Scheme, as well as continued engagement on digital transformation and technology benchmarking.
Although the agreement establishes a framework for future collaboration, it does not create legally binding obligations or immediate financial commitments for either party.
According to the implementation provisions of the MoU, any project, programme, investment, or commercial arrangement arising from the agreement will be subject to separate negotiations and to the execution of definitive agreements in accordance with applicable laws and the internal approval processes of both organisations.
The two organisations reaffirmed their commitment to advancing social insurance administration, workplace safety, rehabilitation services and employee compensation through sustained technical cooperation and knowledge exchange.
The partnership offers NSITF an opportunity to learn from one of Africa’s oldest compensation institutions. Established in 1894, RMA has more than 130 years of experience administering compensation for occupational injuries and diseases.
