Obaro tasks organisations on digitalisation, governance framework

John Obaro

Founder and Group Managing Director of SystemSpecs, Dr John Obaro, has charged directors to foster a culture that embraces digital transformation in strengthening organisational performance.

Obaro spoke on ‘Digitalisation and Governance’ at a plenary session at this year’s directors’ conference organised by the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria.

He added that fostering a culture that embraces digital transformation involves ensuring boards are digitally literate and collaborating with tech experts to develop solutions that align with their governance needs.

He said adopting this step not only strengthens organisations but also contributes to the creation of a governance framework that is equipped for the future—whether in the boardroom or national governance.

The SystemSpecs boss, while highlighting the impact of digitalisation on organisations’ governance structure, said it offers powerful tools to enhance governance efficiency, reshaping how organisations approach accountability, compliance, and risk management.

He mentioned enhanced transparency and accountability, improved decision-making through data analytics, increased stakeholder engagement and also streamlined processes with clear and predictable outcomes as areas that can significantly influence governance.

He stressed that as companies continue to embrace new technologies, boards must also evolve their governance structures to manage the innovations effectively while maintaining the trust of their stakeholders .

According to him, the key is balancing the opportunities of digital transformation with the risks, especially in cybersecurity, data ethics, and how they uphold accountability.

On digitalisation in the public sector, the SystemSpecs chief said the shift entails not only the use of technology to improve efficiency and service delivery but also a fundamental change in the relationship between governments and citizens, promoting transparency, engagement and accountability.

Obaro added that improved service delivery, data-driven decision-making, citizen engagement, and participation, as well as increased transparency and accountability are areas of possible impact.
