Shell trains 150 Niger Delta entrepreneurs

Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC), has trained 150 young entrepreneurs in Niger Delta region through its 2015 edition of LiveWIRE programme.

Speaking at the weekend in Port Harcourt, during the graduation ceremony of the beneficiaries, the General Manager, External Relations SPDC, Igo Weli said, the LiveWire programme is aimed at contributing to economic empowerment and job creation for youths of the region.

Represented by Evans kukrubor, Weli noted that, the programme since inception in 2003 have trained over 6000 young and upcoming entrepreneurs from the area and empowered over 3000 of them with start-off grant to set up their businesses.

According to him, 50 beneficiaries were drawn from each of the three Niger Delta states of Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta state where the company has its business establishments.

Weli said, “The primary objective of the SPDC LiveWire programme is to contribute to economic empowerment and job creation for youths in our communities. This is one of our driving philosophies which incidentally aligns significantly with the National Youth Policy of Nigeria which has the reduction of youth unemployment as its major focus.
“The LiveWire programme is the flagship of our youth enterprise development interventions in Nigeria. The programme provides access to entrepreneurship training, business development services as well as start-up capital or youth-owned business, as well as the provision of opportunity for the beneficiaries to access funds from financial institutions.”

The commissioner for Science, Technology and Manpower Development Bayelsa State, Indutimi Komonibo, lauded shell for the initiative saying, it would reduce unemployment in the region, develop the youths and make them self-reliance.
He urged the beneficiaries to utilize the skills they received effectively to better their lives.
“We as the government always partner with SPDC and other Organizations because we believe that the best way to empower people is to develop the mind-set and that is what SHELL has just done.
“Your LiveWire program is a good initiative and Bayela state government so much believe in this initiative. We share in your dream, focus and vision and pledge our readiness to support, partner and encourage you in this.” He added.
