Tinubu appoints Odion, Rabiu as FCCPC commissioners

President Bola Tinubu has appointed veteran journalist Louis Odion and grassroots politician Ummasalma Rabiu to senior leadership positions at the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), the presidency announced on Wednesday.

Odion, from Edo State, will serve as executive commissioner for operations, while Rabiu, 35, from Kano State, has been nominated executive commissioner for corporate services. Both appointments are subject to Senate confirmation, in line with the FCCPC Act of 2018.

Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga described Odion as “a seasoned media professional” with stints as senior technical assistant to former vice-president Yemi Osinbajo and as Edo State’s commissioner for information. He holds master’s degrees in Modern War Studies from the University of Buckingham, UK, and in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos.

Rabiu is the founder of the Usir Foundation, a non-profit focused on education, skills training and humanitarian work. Known for her grassroots engagement, she has championed inclusive governance and encouraged women and youth participation in politics.

The appointments come less than two months after Tinubu named Olatunji Bello as the FCCPC’s chief executive officer and executive vice-chairman, part of a broader push to strengthen the country’s consumer protection regime.

The FCCPC regulates competition and safeguards consumer rights in Nigeria, a market of over 200 million people, where concerns over fair trade practices, product quality and corporate accountability have grown in recent years.
