UNDP partners Norwegian ministry, trains 250 IDPs
OVER 250 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the North-East have benefitted from a training programme organised by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ameliorate the sufferings of the people in the northern part of the country.
The benefitting states are Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the first batch of the orientation programme for beneficiaries drawn from the North East in Jos, Plateau State, Resident Coordinator, UNDP, Dauda Toure said investing in such a scheme as the ongoing one will empower women and youth, while rekindling their hope, spirit and determination to overcome their plight and all odds confronting them.
According to him, the programme would go a long way to entrench peace and stability in Nigeria, stressing that the way to sustainable peace lies in addressing developmental challenge in the region, in addition to the military operations.
“As part of its support package, the UNDP and other UN Agencies is currently finalizing the formulation of an early recovery programme for the north east as a framework for engagement with the government and other stakeholders in the reconstruction of the region.”
Toure, represented by Peace and Development Advisor of UNDP, Dr. Zebulon S. Takwa said the training components, which include physical fitness, mental training, leadership and civic education, conflict prevention and peace building, peaceful co-existence, dialogue would prepare the beneficiaries to an asset in the rebuilding of the communities.
He stated further that a number of humanitarian interventions by UN partner agencies are underway and increasing by the day, adding that, the successful efforts by the government at curbing the insurgency is gradually paving the way for recovery and development in the area.
“The business management skills acquired including book-keeping and accounting, psycho-social and trauma counselling/healing will help you to live peacefully within your communities and assist in the effective management of your businesses.
