30 female artists in symbols of rights, justice, action at Mydrim

Mydrim Gallery, on Norman William Street, Ikoyi, Lagos, will host 30 female artists in an all-female exhibition that will explore the theme, Rights, Justice and Action for all Women and Girls. The show will run for two weeks from March 5 to 16, 2026.

The women, under the umbrella of Female Artists Association of Nigeria (FEAAN), said the show would cement their position in the world of art.

Curator of the show, Adedoyin Adelani-Bello, said it is a yearly exhibition to show how women see themselves and how best they could represent themselves positively.

She said the show is also an avenue to tell the world that women are also a voice that needs to be heard.

She remarked that women are seen as just mothers, wives and daughters, and are not getting the right attention needed and not believed to have the strength to work on their own or talk in public.

“We decided to use the theme because we believe that by showcasing our works, our strength will be known, and our voice will be heard.

“I’m a painter and an embroider. I’m showcasing two works and they are both children portrait. One is titled,Longing for tomorrow and the other, a Quiet Confidence; we cannot talk about the women without talking about the children.

“I started incorporating the male gender recently into my work because many people have been telling me that I have beautiful works but only show women and my response has been that I am fighting for myself because as a child, my father always told me that my place is in the kitchen, so, I never had a real opportunity, but becoming an artist made me realise that I have a voice and I can tell people that the girl child is the best. Motherhood has also inspired my work.”

Edna Abugewa Ekenimoh, an artist who specialises in textile, who will be exhibiting two works, said: “I have a piece, titled,Path of Transformation, which speaks on womanhood; women are seen as light. If you train a woman, you have educated the world, so, women are power creative and we must have a voice.

for women in our society and I am glad that women are speaking up.”

Also, Aisha Idrisu, said: “I do more of Islamic calligraphy because the source of my creativity comes from the source itself. I mix colours, blend them with gold, blues showing the serenity of the sky, a bit of green and more blues. The title of my work is, Allahu Akbar.”

For Chinazo Anozie, her work, Sunflower Girl, is a representation of a woman who is awaken, standing in her own sovereignty. A paining that encourages women. “Women go through a lot, so, I made this work colourful to show that the sun will shine again and it is going to be beautiful again. The second work is Black Beauty.”

Also, Fatima Akindele-Dairo, a painter, said: “I’m drawn to the connection between human and nature. We have veins, blood and others connected in our body and in plants, there are leaves, roots, branches and I came to realise that our environment has something to do about us.

If the veins can be connected and sustain us, also, everything around connect to help us.”

On the skin texture, she said: “I use lines, which I named layers of represented reality, that’s, one thing connected to the other; the physical connected to the spiritual world. I titled my works Botanic Dream and Earthly Adornment.”

Speaking on hosting the artist, co-curator, Mydrim Gallery, Idowu Bankole, said: “I know the exhibition is already a success; they come with varieties. I am pleased that this is happening. I’ve been at Mydrim for over four years and I’ve never experienced women coming together for an exhibition.”
