Nigerian theatre has long distinguished itself with some of its practitioners defining standards, just as the theatre is rooted in the African society from which it derives its aesthetics that are imbedded in its myths, rites, drama and folk narrative.

It is in appreciation of its thriving legacy that the Theatre Arts Department, University of Ibadan has sent out calls for papers and essays in honour of Professor Matthew M. Umukoro, who will turn 70 in 2020. The theme of this festschrift is The Nigeria Academy: The Theatre Artist and Ideology in a Glocal Context.

The sub-themes up for detailed study are ‘Scholar-artist and Theatre Studies,’ ‘Interrogating African Theatre and Performance Theories,’ ‘Critical Account on the Works of Prof. Matthew M Umukoro,’ ‘Oral Interpretation and Stage Performance,’ ‘The Nigeria Playtext and its Contexts: political, social and its history,’ ‘Non-Fictive in the Fictive: Perspective on Historical plays,’ ‘The Generational Divide in Drama: Alignment and Realignment, The philosophy and Aesthetic of Drama and Theatre in cognizance of the Poetry,’ ‘Fact and symbolism in African Drama, Dance and the Metaphor of Nigeria.’

Others are ‘The Comic and Sci-Fi Texts and Literary Imagination,’ ‘Culture Media and Education in Nigeria, Educational Radio Broadcasts in Nigeria and Media Studies in Nigerian,’ ‘The Functions of African Drama in a Glocal World,’ ‘Radical Drama in the Context of Contested Space,’ ‘The New Media and the Ethos of National Integration,’ ‘Gender Aesthetics in Drama and Theatre,’ ‘Feminism and Activism in Fe/Male Texts,’ ‘Nigeria Theatre and its Diasporas,’ ‘The Theatre Critic and Historiographies,’ and ‘Media Studies in Nigeria, New Areas in Theatre Studies,’ ‘Music/Musical Performance in the Global Context,’ ‘Towards the Poesis of Inclusion of African Performative Arts,’ ‘Creativity and Embodiment in Theatre Kinaesthetics,’ ‘Scholarship in Theatre Technology/Misce en scene,’ ‘Traditional African Drama and Theatre,’ and ‘Studies on Masters of Nigeria of Nigeria Drama.’

Abstracts is not more than 3,500 words, should be submitted on or before March 2, 2020 to profumukoroteacheris@gmail.com. The festschrift is expected to be launched at his birthday ceremony on May 14-15, 2020, and it would be held at Wole Soyinka Arts Theatre, University of Ibadan.
